Native American zodiac signs are based on a lunar calendar

The ancient Native American zodiac signs are based on a lunar calendar, just like our ancestors, the Celts.

In Native American zodiac signs, the year is imagined as a circle divided into 12 moons. Your birthday is your entry into the circle, i.e. into the corresponding moon. Additional elements from nature are also assigned: animal, plant, mineral, colour. However, the assignment of the animals is the most important.

Unlike other zodiac systems, Native Americans tend to place less emphasis on a fate predetermined by birth. They believe that everything is constantly changing and becoming more refined. This is reflected in the idea that people continually move through the circle of the twelve moons and are therefore exposed to constantly changing influences.

Native American astrological zodiac circles are also called the Earth Wheel or Medicine Wheel. Here, “medicine” does not only mean remedies, but everything that heals a person and makes them whole: objects, but also ideas, visions, dreams and actions. Each animal totem (totem means sign) symbolises a particular stage of development in the cycle of nature. The four elements — fire, air, earth and water — form the overarching foundation and are described as broad driving forces.

The 4 elements

The elements from which life is created are: fire + air + earth + water.

The element fire stands for spirit in the sense of creative power, spirituality and action.

Air represents intellect and thinking, interest and flexibility.

The element earth stands for physicality, focus, stability, structure and order.

The element water stands for emotions, calm and the soul, as well as empathy.

The 4 clans with 3 animal totems each

Three animal totems (totem = sign) are assigned to each of the four elements. They form the so-called clans. Members of a clan harmonise particularly well with one another.

The Hawk Clan is under the sign of fire. Falcon, salmon and owl are assigned to this clan.

The Butterfly Clan is under the sign of air and consists of deer, raven and otter.

The Turtle Clan is under the sign of earth and consists of beaver, brown bear and goose.

The Frog Clan is under the sign of water and consists of woodpecker, snake and wolf.

The 4 winds of the 4 cardinal directions

The winds of the four cardinal directions also have their meaning. They quarter the zodiac and symbolise knowledge and wisdom.

East wind, wind of spring (falcon, beaver and deer), promotes foresight and spirituality.

South wind, wind of summer (woodpecker, salmon and brown bear), promotes perception and feeling.

West wind, wind of autumn (raven, snake and owl), promotes insight and understanding.

North wind, wind of winter (goose, otter and wolf), promotes rest and renewal.
